Cryptography

OHB DIGITAL provides digital solutions for highly secure data transmission. Mounting digitization is calling for secure communications, e.g. for railway infrastructure. In this connection, OHB DIGITAL cryptography products and IT security methods shield the control systems for signal equipment and boxes as well as level crossings from the risk of unauthorized use in accordance with the highest standards.

CryptOHBguard ®

The cryptOHBguard system is an industrial embedded PC executed as a DIN rail module. Used as a VPN LST gateway in digital signal box technology, it permits the cryptographic transmission of security-critical information in an Ethernet-based transmission system in accordance with EN 50159.

Quantum Key Distribution

DE OHB DIGITAL is closely involved in the development of a European infrastructure for quantum communications, which is crucially dependent on satellites. One important application is the distribution of digital keys via entangled quanta. This method is completely secure due to the underlying physics applied and will be used in particularly sensitive areas in the future. OHB DIGITAL works closely with partners in research and industry associations to carve out a pioneering role for Europe in this area of innovation.

Secure Satellite Communications

Modern satellite communications are supplementing fixed network connections by adding cable or fiber optics and 5G mobile communications, bringing the Internet to users from space. Among other things, OHB DIGITAL is involved in providing high-performance broadband connections even in remote locations and in enabling machine-to-machine communications for a variety of industries via the Internet of Things.

Among other things, OHB is participating in missions for geostationary satellites as well as the development of a satellite-based communications system for the EU.

SATCOMBw

OHB System AG has installed a ground station for P-band data transmission for military satellite communications. The UHF DAMA control station forms a key element of communications with the armed forces in the countries of operation and meets the specified military standards for UHF satellite communications. It is DAMA-capable (demand assign multiple access), meaning that individual uplink and downlink channels can be managed separately and allocated in accordance with specific requirements. UHF SATCOM modems form the heart of the system, allocating transmission resources individually to the military personnel in action.

The successful completion of this system testifies to OHB DIGITAL’s cross-system competence in ground stations and equipment in electronic, IT and also mechanical terms. The customer also benefits from the expertise that OHB has in developing and integrating SATCOM equipment. With our reconnaissance and communications satellite systems, we are making further contributions to strengthening Germany’s autonomy.

OHB DIGITAL has been awarded a contract for the regeneration of mobile ground stations for the German federal armed forces’ satellite communications system (SATCOMBw).

Bremen-based company OHB Digital Connect recently pooled its expertise through its merger with Mainz-based antenna manufacturer MT Mechatronics, which is also part of the OHB Group. With this contract awarded by the German federal armed forces, OHB Digital Connect is now taking flight in its new formation.

The German federal armed forces use the SATCOMBw mobile ground stations, which can be installed in different versions, to transfer data, information and voice messages from different locations. The COMSATBw-1 and COMSATBw-2 satellites forming part of the system are located in a geostationary orbit at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers. The mobile ground stations as well as other training and simulation systems will now be gradually upgraded with a system and hardware update at the OHB site in Mainz. “First of all, we will regenerate, test and verify a prototype, after which we will move into series production and launch the regeneration of the ground stations,” explains the responsible OHB system engineer Dr. Christian Blohm.
